What Is a Householder Appeal?

A Householder Appeal is the process of challenging a refusal relating to:

  • Single-storey rear or side extensions

  • Two-storey extensions

  • Loft conversions and dormers

  • Porches

  • Outbuildings and garden buildings

  • Alterations to windows, doors or materials

  • Boundary walls and fences

  • Small residential alterations

Householder Appeals are decided through the Written Representations procedure and are usually much faster than other appeal routes.

When Can You Submit a Householder Appeal?

You can appeal if:

  • The application was refused

  • The council imposed unreasonable conditions

  • There is non-determination (no decision within 8 weeks)

  • The council misinterpreted policy or design guidance

  • The refusal reasons are not supported by evidence

  • The proposal aligns with character and amenity expectations

Legal deadlines apply — you must submit within 12 weeks of the decision date unless the site is subject to enforcement action then shorter deadlines apply.
