North Yorkshire Council's latest Call for Sites has now closed, but the process of assessing and promoting land through the new North Yorkshire Local Plan is only beginning.

North Yorkshire Council reopened its Call for Sites for six weeks during May and June 2026 as part of the preparation of the first new North Yorkshire-wide Local Plan.
The Council has now published a map showing sites submitted up to and including 22 June 2026.
Importantly, publication on the map does not mean that a site has been accepted for development. The submitted sites have not yet been through the full assessment process and no allocation decisions have been made.
The Council will now assess the sites before consultation takes place later in the Local Plan process.
North Yorkshire Council will now examine the sites put forward and take advice from planning officers and specialist consultees before deciding which sites should progress further.
The submission enters the Council's Local Plan evidence base for consideration.
Planning officers and specialists consider matters such as flooding, roads, schools, ecology and heritage.
Sites may progress towards potential allocation, be dismissed, or potentially be retained as reserve options.
The Council intends to consult the community later when there is greater clarity over which sites may progress.
Submission should not be treated as the end of the promotion process. As the Council assesses competing sites, evidence around deliverability, constraints, infrastructure and the strategic merits of your land may become increasingly important.

North Yorkshire Council is not currently accepting further Call for Sites submissions through the closed 2026 exercise.

Schools, utilities, health provision and other infrastructure requirements can affect the timing and scale of development.
The site's relationship with settlements, services, future growth needs and the emerging spatial strategy will also matter.
North Yorkshire Council invited sites for a broad range of uses and designations, reflecting the wide range of matters that the new Local Plan will need to address.
North Yorkshire Council was created in April 2023, bringing the former district and county council arrangements together into a single unitary authority.
The new North Yorkshire Local Plan will ultimately replace the existing legacy Local Plans and provide a single strategic planning framework for development across the Council area.
This makes the current plan-making process particularly important for landowners because the future settlement strategy and pattern of development are being reconsidered across a very large area.
Important: the new North Yorkshire Local Plan does not cover the North York Moors National Park or Yorkshire Dales National Park, which have separate Local Plan arrangements. Minerals and waste will also be dealt with through a separate plan.
North Yorkshire Council approved a revised Local Plan timetable in June 2026 following changes to the national plan-making system.
The Call for Sites is therefore only one element of a process that will continue for several years.
